Pulling the audio out of a video is the one job in this toolkit that doesn't have to run in real time. The browser decodes the whole audio track into memory at once, so a ten-minute recording is usually done in a few seconds.
That makes it the practical way to get a lecture onto your phone as a podcast, keep the audio from an interview, save a song from a video you recorded, or hand a recording to a transcription service that only accepts audio.
MP3 is encoded on your device, so nothing is uploaded and no length limit is imposed. WAV is offered as well for editing work, but be ready for the size — uncompressed audio runs about 10 MB per minute in stereo.
Your browser has to understand the audio codec inside the container. MP4 with AAC and WebM with Opus both work. Some MKV and MOV files carry codecs the browser can't open — convert the file to MP4 first.
192 kbps is a good default for music. For speech, 96 or 128 kbps sounds fine and halves the size.
